Abstract
Purpose: The objective of this study was to investigate the degree of substance use among Korean adolescents according to their sociodemographic and behavioral characteristics and to identify the relationship between parents¡¯ and adolescents¡¯ substance use behavior.

Methods: This descriptive correlative study conducted visit-surveys with organized questionnaires and sampled 5,940 middle school and high school students living in regional urban and rural areas. KOADAST-2 was used to measure the degree of substance use. Data collected was analyzed by t-tests, one-way ANOVA, and Pearson¡¯s correlation coefficients using SPSS/WIN 14.0.

Results: Findings revealed that: 1) the degree of substance use is higher in students who are male, high school seniors and whose friend or parents are involved in substance use; 2) substance use is prevalent in students with poor academic performance, high number of absences, and who have experienced running away, fighting, and attempting suicide; 3) Pearson¡¯s correlation coefficients revealed a significant association between parents¡¯ substance use behavior and adolescent substance use behavior like drinking, smoking, and drug use.

Conclusion: Understanding the importance of psychosocial and behavioral adolescent characteristics, such as parental and social influences and academic performance, significantly affecting levels of substance use will be essential to develop preventive measures for adolescents.
